Indian Gold Weight Units Explained
Tola — The Most Common Indian Gold Unit
Tola (तोला) is the most widely used gold weight unit in India. One tola equals exactly 11.6638 grams. The unit dates back to the British colonial era when it was defined as the weight of a silver rupee coin. IBJA (India Bullion & Jewellers Association) quotes prices in tola alongside per-gram rates.
Sovereign — South Indian Standard
In Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the sovereign is the standard unit for gold jewellery transactions. 1 sovereign = 8 grams (22K gold). Bridal jewellery is typically quoted in sovereigns in these states.
Troy Ounce — International Benchmark
All international gold prices (London fix, COMEX futures) are denominated in USD per troy ounce. 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. MCX converts this to INR per 10 grams for domestic trading.
Anna, Masha & Ratti — Traditional Units
These pre-metric units are rarely used today but appear in old jewellery deeds and inheritance documents. 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti = 16 anna.
