How Making Charges Work
Percentage vs Flat Rate — Which is Better for You?
When gold prices are high (as they are in 2026), a flat rate per gram is better for the buyer because it doesn't increase with the gold price. A 15% percentage charge on ₹1,35,093 (10g 22K) = ₹20,264 — whereas a flat ₹400/g rate on 10g = just ₹4,000.
Exchange vs Fresh Purchase Making Charges
When exchanging old gold, many jewellers waive or heavily discount making charges on the new piece. Always ask for "exchange making charges" separately — they are often 50–70% lower than fresh purchase charges.
BIS Hallmarking and Making Charges
Since June 2023, BIS hallmarking with HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) is mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India. The assay cost (₹35–45/piece) is typically included in making charges. Hallmarked jewellery commands 1–2% premium on resale.
FAQ — Gold Making Charges
Making charges are the labour cost a jeweller charges for converting raw gold into jewellery. They can be a percentage of the gold value (e.g. 15%) or a flat rate per gram (e.g. ₹350/gram). They attract 5% GST separately.
Machine-made plain jewellery: 8–12%. Semi-handmade (chains, bangles): 12–18%. Fully handcrafted or designer pieces: 20–35%. BIS certified gold coins: 3–6%. Always compare making charges across jewellers before buying.
Yes, making charges are negotiable, especially for large purchases. Organised jewellers (Tanishq, Malabar) have fixed charges; standalone jewellers often negotiate. Exchange of old gold can reduce effective making charges.
5% GST applies on making charges. This is higher than the 3% GST on gold itself. For an organised jeweller, both are shown separately on the GST invoice under SAC code 9988.
Hallmarking is done by BIS-authorised centres and costs ₹35–45 per piece (paid by the jeweller). This may be included in making charges. Hallmarking ensures purity of declared karat — it does not affect making charges.
Total = (Weight × Rate/g × Purity%) + (Making charges) + 3% GST on metal + 5% GST on making. Example: 10g 22K at ₹13,509.27/g + 15% making = Metal ₹1,35,093 + Making ₹20,264 + GST = ₹1,60,423 approx.
