Silver Purity Standards — What They Mean
Silver 999 — Fine Silver
99.9% pure silver. Used for investment bars, coins, and high-end electroplating. Soft and malleable — not suitable for jewellery that sees daily wear. Available as MMTC/Malabar certified 100g, 500g, and 1kg bars.
Silver 925 — Sterling Silver
The global standard for silver jewellery. Alloyed with 7.5% copper for hardness. Look for "925" or "STERLING" stamp. Tarnishes over time but is easily polished. Common for necklaces, rings, earrings, and silverware.
Silver 900 — Coin Silver
90% silver. Historically used for American and some Indian coins. Found in antique items. Has a slightly duller finish than sterling.
Silver 800 — German/European Silver
80% silver used in European silverware, cutlery, and decorative pieces. Common in German, Dutch, and Turkish antique silver items.
How to Check Silver Purity
Look for a hallmark stamp (925, 999, 800). Use an acid test kit (silver-specific). Professional XRF testing at assaying centres. The BIS hallmarking scheme for silver ensures accurate purity marking.
