How Gold Value is Calculated in India
The Gold Valuation Formula
The intrinsic value of any gold item is calculated using this formula:
For example, 15 grams of 22K gold at today's rate of ₹14,872.24/gram:
15 × (22÷24) × ₹14,872.24 = ₹2,04,493
Understanding the Full Invoice Price
When buying jewellery, the final price has four components:
- Metal value — weight × karat purity × rate
- Making charges — 8–25% of metal value (or ₹200–600/gram flat)
- 3% GST on the metal value
- 5% GST on making charges
Typical Making Charges by Jewellery Type
| Jewellery Type | Making Charge Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plain gold bangles | 8–12% | Machine-made |
| Gold chains | 10–15% | Hallmarked, machine |
| Necklaces / Harams | 15–25% | Mixed hand/machine |
| Kundan / Antique | 25–35% | Fully handcrafted |
| Plain gold rings | 10–18% | Cast + polished |
| Gold coins / bars | 3–6% | MMTC/BIS certified |
Gold Value Calculator — FAQ
Gold value = Weight (grams) × (Karat ÷ 24) × Rate per gram. For example, 10g of 22K gold at ₹₹14,872.24/gram = ₹1,36,329. Add 3% GST on gold value and 5% GST on making charges to get the final invoice amount.
22K gold price per gram = 24K rate × (22÷24) = 24K rate × 0.9167. Today: ₹14,872.24 × 0.9167 = ₹13,632.89 per gram.
Yes. 3% GST applies on the gold value (metal price). 5% GST applies on making charges separately. Both are mandatory and must appear on the GST invoice.
Jewellery price = Metal value + Making charges + 3% GST on metal + 5% GST on making. Making charges range from 8–25% for machine-made pieces to 25%+ for handcrafted jewellery.
For selling old gold: Value = Weight × Purity × Today's 24K rate. A jeweller will deduct for impurities and offer 97–99% of calculated value for hallmarked pieces. No GST applies when selling back gold.
1 sovereign = 8 grams of 22K gold (standard in South India). Value = 8 × ₹13,632.89 = ₹1,09,063 (metal value before making charges and GST).
